This User's Guide has been compiled for Vers TS v.1.8 and below. For the currently produced Vers TS v.2.0 User's Guide is here.

Purpose.

The Vers TS sensor is used to determine the exact coordinates of the tool (cutter) installed on a CNC milling machine by contact method. The CNC system generates these coordinates when the tool touchs the VersTS measurement platform and uses them to calculate the height and diameter of the tool, to link the machining program to the workpiece location. The device can be used with various CNC systems: LinuxCNC, Mach3, embedded systems on industrial machines, etc.

Installation.

The VesrTS location is defined so that the entire surface of the ceramic platform of the device is in the working area of the machine.

The device is fixed to the machine body with two M3 screws, while leaning on a solid surface with two balls, which will allow for a transverse adjustment of the device.

Two threaded holes must be prepared in the machine body according to the following rules:

- the centers of the holes must be located on a straight line parallel to one of the axes X or Y

- distance between centers of mounting holes 20mm

- the hole has a thread M3, the depth of thread is not less than 6mm for the case of steel, if the case of softer materials, it is recommended to mount a steel nut with thread M3 and a thread depth of at least 6 mm

- the distance between the centers of the supporting balls is 15 mm, lie on the axis of symmetry of the part, the center of the ball, which is in the photo to the left, is 4 mm from the edge of the pad, the balls must rest on a solid (for example, steel) surface.

After fixing the device on the machine body, the measuring area is pre-set parallel to the XY plane (Fig. 1). For this purpose, a 2 mm hexagonal key with a shorter side is included.

Connection.

Be careful! Vers PR is an NPN-NC sensor, i.e. normally closed to ground. Connection to controllers with PNP inputs, i.e. designed for sensors short-circuited to power, it is possible only with the help of special npn-to-pnp Converter, otherwise, both the sensor and the controller may be damaged.

The connection scheme for normally-closed npn sensors is applied, the color of the wires inside the cable corresponds to the colors of the connections  in the scheme. (Attention! Allowable supply voltage for the specific version of the device, see "Specifications").

Adjustment.

Before starting the measurement, it is necessary to adjust the device. As a result of the adjustment, the surface of the measuring platform should become parallel to the XY plane. The control indicator is clamped into the spindle or fixed to the carriage of the Z axis.

The indicator should be sensitive to a weak effect of 0.3-0.5N (for example, most lever indicators have this property).

First, the adjustment  along the axis of the device, then along a line perpendicular to the axis of the device.

Step 1. The control points for adjustment along the axis of the device are shown in Fig.2. The control points are set to the same level in Z by turning the adjusting screws M2.5 (the screws are located inside the holes indicated by the green arrows in Fig. 2) with a 2 mm hex key from the kit. When adjusting, both tightening and loosening of the screws are used. The key is recommended to hold for a short lever, so as not to develop excessive force.

Step 2. The control points for adjustment along a line perpendicular to the axis of the device are shown in Fig.3. The control points are set to the same Z level by turning the M3 adjusting screws with a 2.5 mm hex wrench from the kit. When adjusting, both tightening and loosening of the screws are used. The key is recommended to hold for a short lever, so as not to develop excessive force.

It will take several cycles of Step 1 - Step 2 to achieve the minimum deviation acceptable for a particular measurement.
